Data Monday: Networked Consumer Devices

Recent numbers on the growth and use of networked consumer device platforms.

  • In the second quarter of 2009, netbooks accounted for 22.5% of all portable computer shipments worldwide. That is up from 5.6 percent a year ago. (source)
  • 34% of students buying laptops are planning on purchasing small, lightweight netbooks. Another 49% are buying full-sized PC laptops. (source)
  • During 2nd Quarter 2009, the number of people watching mobile video increased 70% from last year and people who watch video online increased their viewing by 46% compared to a year ago. (source)
  • As of June 2009, this panel shows 57% of consumers with Internet access at home watch TV and go online simultaneously at least once a month. On average these consumers spend 2 hours, 39 minutes each month simultaneously using the Internet while also watching TV. (source)
  • As Americans continue to watch more TV each year there are also more TVs in each home than people – in 2009 the average U.S. home had only 2.5 people vs 2.86 television sets. 54% of Americans have three or more TV sets in the home. (source)
  • Smartphone sales will surpass worldwide PC sales by the end of 2011 (source)
  • Worldwide mobile phone sales totalled 286.1 million units in the second quarter of 2009, a 6.1 percent decrease from the second quarter of 2008 (source)
  • Smartphone sales surpassed 40 million units, a 27 percent increase from the same period last year, representing the fastest-growing segment of the mobile-devices market (source)
  • 68 percent of smartphone users report feeling positively engaged, second only to the 70 percent of users positively engaged while on a computer. Only 47 percent of feature phone users reported positive mobile site engagement. (source)
  • More than 65 million people are now actively using Facebook on their mobile devices. Increased from 20 million just eight months ago (<a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=129875017130″>source)
  • Only 19 percent of Android users download at least one paid application per month, compared to 40 and 50 percent for iPod Touch and iPhone owners (source)
  • Over half of Android and iPhone users spend more than 30 minutes per day using apps (source)
  • iPhone/iPod Touch owners, an average, spend $5 to buy five paid apps every month. (source)
