Remember the days when the word Google was not interchangeable with internet? Or when every site seemed to have a Netscape icon on it? Or when Flash was still something you cleaned your floor with? Then you were clearly using the web in the mid to late 1990s when pages were rudimentary affairs containing lists of links and information. This post is a nostalgic look at web design trends gone by, thank god they have gone by!!!

It’s been a busy summer for us here at Juice with more and more companies asking us to help them take their data and create dashboard applications that help them get more done. While working on these accounts, we’ve seen an ever increasing interest and awareness in proper dashboarding techniques.

We believe that the best software is the software that people <del>like</del> love to use. Typically they “love it” because it helps them get their job done quicker and/or better. This can be for any of a number of reasons, but it’s great to see that buyers are becoming less satisfied with junky information applications.

So, we’ve decided to share the wealth. We’ve decided to compile many of the design tips we’ve harvested from our client projects over the years. These learnings are collected into a 3 part paper entitled A Guide to Creating Dashboards People Love to Use (catchy, isn’t it?). We’ve written this to help people who want to create information applications that break out of the horrible constraints of the industry-standards we’ve all seen and have been disappointed with.

We’ve made this paper available to folks who we’ve done business with or who have registered with us in the past, but we didn’t want our readers to be left out. If you didn’t receive an invitation to download the paper (maybe because you’re one of those lurkers out there -shame on you now’s your chance to be part of the “in crowd”. If you’re interested, register to download your own copy of Part 1: Foundation. For those who register, we’ll be mailing Parts 2 (Structure) and 3 (Information Design) over the next few weeks.

We think you’ll find it really useful and hope you’ll let us know how it helps you communicate your information more effectively.

A few years back, the only way a web designer could enhance a web design with the kind of cool effects, similar to sliders and scrollers, was by using Flash. Even if you loved it or loathed it, Flash certainly filled the creativity gap that was created by the limitations of HTML, CSS and Javascript. Lately, though, with the advancement and popularity of the javascript libraries (especially with jquery), those cool effects can be created with a lot less code, a lot less frustration and the file size is a damn sight smaller than using a Flash movie.

Just think, CSS3 and HTML5 is gaining momentum, mix these two elements in with jquery, and quite possibly, Flash will become redundant.

You have probably seen those cool image and content sliders everywhere, it is a new fad that has cropped up this year. And every month it seems new styles and tecniques are being developed, and you may be wondering: “How do they do that?”
In this design news resource, from noupe.com, they have taken five very cool and popular styles of image and content sliders and explained in the easiest way possible how each one was created. A basic knowledge of Javascript is definetly required, and everyone will take something from this great resource.

On the same theme as the above news item, this post is a showcase of creative methods using javascript for sliders and scrollers. A special mention goes to Howarths.nl, who has quite possibly came up with the best and most original tabbed navigation using javascript. For the first time, SIGGRAPH has adopted the theme of “information aesthetics“. Part of this theme was a physical exhibition, curated by Victoria Szabo. The exhibition space was open and less busy and stuffy like some of the rooms where the Emerging Technologies demonstrations happened in, one floor above. Computer screens, posters, large projection displays and even some physical artifacts made it well paced exhibition, that did not attempt to overwhelm the viewer. However, its location within the New Orleans Convention Center might have been its only disadvantage, along a long corridor that was not well visited by the typical conference visitor. Images of the setup can be admired below, together with some new or unknown projects.

The showcase exhibition contained many works that should already be known to the *avid* infosthetics reader. Do you (still) know them all?

. News Knitter materializes large-scale data gathered from online political news through beautiful wearable garments. Seeing them in person make you only wish more that they would be for sale! (nb: potential buyers can leave your contact details Mahir’s website)

. OpenStreetMap 2008: A Year of Edits is a wiki-style 3D globe map of the world, in which all edits over time, themselves results of physical local surveys, flash white and then decays through yellow and red to purple.

. MSNBC Hurricane Tracker and Oakland Crimespotting both how off Stamen’s ability in both graphical design and technical development. It attracted quite some people by its additional poster and bright downlight.

. Synchronous Objects for One Flat Thing, reproduced is an interactive screen-based collection of visualizations revealing deep structures of choreographic thinking through a vivid collection of information objects in the form of 3D computer animation, annotation, and interactive graphics. Even the 3 separate displays could show only a glimpse of its richness.

. The playfulness of Visual Poetry was represented by 3 nicely framed posters.
